For years I have spied an OEL web manga from Australia called Domain Tnemrot. What does that name even mean? So anyway… The makers made it into physical comics you could find in places. Like Comixโฆoh wait, nevermind. Indyplanet and GlobalComix definitely have it though. That’s how I found it.
Domain Tnemrot is…
Not quite Mad Max, more like radiation and other stuff happened in the background to cause collapses. Specifics were spotty and people were trying to survive so they didnโt really bother to see what happened. And with time, the records degraded.
Then the usual story; the rich, powerful and/or ambitious take advantage and things get a little more feudal. Modern but feudal.
Instead of sports, TV, or video games, the have-nots are rounded up and bred to be gladiators. Augmented by bands or collars that give them some enhanced performances. And of course, those are radioactive by just a bit. It only affects people who had them on for a longโฆohโฆ
โฆAnd thatโs when theyโre not unskilled workers, most of them canโt even read. Including when theyโre staff for the haves.
There are resistance cells, but theyโre almost hardly any better.
Basically, most of the adults are self-centered and try to one-up each other.
One gladiator Dae Shyn is a survivor who gets caught up in the events. But he grows close to his legal owner Mia, an eight-year old girl. Partly because he relates to her in some ways.
What Sticks in Domain Tnemrot?
Itโs like this, Dae was basically given to Mia as a toy for her to play with. Unlike the servants however, Miaโs father gave Dae to her with the intent of passive-aggressive torture. He married into Miaโs family and hates that heโs gonna lose what power he has through her.
Since Mia didnโt give Dae a proper control, he manages to survive and thrive in and out of the ring. In fact when Miaโs dad tries to dominate him, Dae gave his security a good thrashing. But he stayed anyway.
Dae didnโt have a good childhood growing up. Despite being a great fighter who can read and make good deals/plans, it came at a price. Some resistance guerrilla fighters would punish and torture Dae and other kids and even blame them for when things go wrong. They didnโt even hide that theyโre strays were meat shields. Basically they were the โgood kindโ of selfish.
Thankfully Dae had someone good enough to look out for him. Itโs why heโs one of the only people in the series with a conscience.
What Makes Good Villains?
Another thing that stood out were the antagonists. More than anything it was howโฆinfantile a lot of them are. Miaโs Dad, Kimberly Morris (he/him/his), the resistance cell leaders, and a few side characters nobody remembers.
Theyโre entitled crybabies and bootlickers who use any money or power to be on top. Even for just a moment of the high.
Thatโs also why the smarter antagonists really stand out. Morrisโs father Gregory for example isnโt just smart, he tries to keep his son stable. Problem is, he still spoils Morris by a fault of his own making; and Gregory has to handle it carefully. Not just because of tough love, but because of legal and financial stock shares his son has. He can only give Morris a golden parachute, even when he doesnโt want to.
And that puts him at odds with New Yorkโs gladiator games host/co-owner Jason. Chances are he came up with the name Domain Tnemrot for marketing reasons. Because he makes that his entire identity. Sometimes at his own disadvantage. Whether thatโs legal, financial, or the fact that he didnโt show up to his own wedding. To the partner who helped build himself up from nothing.
The Point
Do you see now why this is so interesting? Itโs not just because Tatiana Lepikhina does Tite Kubo-like designs or the action in tight sequence. The layers of characterization and the influence they leave behind is what really makes Domain Tnemrot.
Itโs where the action and pace really shine when it comes to anticipation, hindsight, and layered plans.
Granted itโs not a perfect series because there are less cohesive parts.
Like the reason the world got into this state felt like it shouldโve stayed in the background. Or at least in a Q&A like the fact that Morris is surgically sterile.
And of course, Daeโs love life with his co-star Angel isnโt that fleshed out. Their relationship with Mia is endearing, but even thatโs not much.
RelevanceโฆMeaning?
One last thing, Iโm sure people are wondering if this means that Domain Tnemrot is an obscure classic? Like, does it have a grander meaning?
More like itโs a good story that gets people to think that it does. I mean itโs not a commentary about a possible return to slavery or neo-feudal satire. And itโs not a call to arms either.
Is it political? What does that even mean?
โฆ
Alright that makes sense. Political in the sense that it explores themes of civil rights (and lack thereof), maybe commentary on social issues, and challenging power structures and societal norms.
But like I said, the story wasnโt cohesive for politics to be the backbone. Itโs a character-driven story that shows the layers of how peopleโs actions affect others.
If you do find something overtly political as a plot, chances are thatโs more about you as an audience.
Domain Tnemrot Availability
If you can, read Domain Tnemrot when you still can. I don’t really know how long it can stay on GlobalComix before David Herbert cuts his losses. His last appearance was in 2025. Probably still doing well enough but he’s basically a ghost. Otherwise you can buy it on Indyplanet in three albums.
And if you’re not a fan of decompressed storytelling, don’t worry the pace isn’t too slow. They actually come with pretty nice surprises down-the-line that way.
